Education as the Cornerstone of Character Building in Kanowit

KANOWIT – Education must be recognised not only as a measure of academic success but also as the foundation for shaping the character and future of the younger generation, said Ngemah State Assemblyman (ADUN) Anyi Jana.

Speaking at the SMK Sedaya Excellent Award Presentation Ceremony on Thursday, Anyi emphasised that excellence is achieved through the combined efforts of students, teachers, and parents, each playing a vital role in instilling discipline, determination, and leadership qualities.

“Excellence is not something that comes suddenly. It is the result of high discipline, continuous determination and the strong support of teachers and parents. I extend my highest congratulations to all the people of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Sedaya for successfully maintaining a culture of excellence in academics, co-curricular and student character,” he said.

Anyi highlighted that while technology and artificial intelligence (AI) continue to transform education, the role of teachers as character builders remains irreplaceable.

He described educators as the guiding force behind students’ growth, shaping not only their academic achievements but also their values and identity.

He also acknowledged the crucial role of parents, calling them the pillars of moral and emotional support. “The foundations of education and values start at home. Despite the various challenges faced, parents remain steadfast in ensuring that children receive the best education. Your support is the lifeblood of their spirit to continue moving forward,” he added.

During the ceremony, Anyi announced a contribution of RM20,000 from the Small Rural Project (MRP) grant to the SMK Sedaya Parent-Teacher Association (PIBG).

The funding will support school activities in 2026, further strengthening the institution’s commitment to nurturing excellence.

The event was attended by Kanowit District Deputy Education Officer Joseph Jabu, SMK Sedaya Principal Ng Goat Guan, and SMK Sedaya PTA President Alixice Bundong, alongside other distinguished guests.

Their presence underscored the collective effort of educators, parents, and community leaders in supporting the holistic development of students.

Observers note that the ceremony reflects Sarawak’s broader emphasis on education as a driver of both academic achievement and character development.

By recognising excellence and providing resources, schools like SMK Sedaya continue to play a central role in preparing students to face future challenges with resilience and integrity.
