Fatal Crash on Miri Coastal Road Claims Motorcyclist

MIRI — A tragic road accident in the early hours of Tuesday claimed the life of a motorcyclist at KM14 of the Miri Coastal Road, raising fresh concerns over road safety ahead of the upcoming festive season.

The incident occurred at approximately 1.00am and involved a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) and a motorcycle. According to Miri District Police Chief, ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah, police received a report confirming that the crash resulted in the death of a 43-year-old local male motorcyclist at the scene.

Initial investigations revealed that the MPV, driven by a 40-year-old local man, was travelling from Bintulu towards Miri when the accident happened. Upon reaching KM14 of the coastal stretch, the driver is believed to have lost control of the vehicle. The MPV reportedly veered into the opposite lane and collided with the motorcycle, which was travelling from Miri towards Bakong.

The impact of the collision proved fatal for the motorcyclist, who was pronounced dead at the scene by responding authorities. Meanwhile, the MPV driver sustained injuries to his legs and face and was subsequently taken to Miri General Hospital for treatment.

Authorities noted that the accident location was poorly lit, with no street lighting in the area, which may have contributed to the severity of the crash. Investigations into the incident are ongoing under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety and responsible driving, particularly during periods of increased travel activity.
