Fire Dept Patrols Flood-Risk Areas in Kuching

Fire Dept Patrols Flood-Risk Areas in Kuching

KUCHING: The Fire and Rescue Department has stepped up monitoring efforts in several flood-prone areas across the city following continuous heavy rain since early this morning.

According to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department, patrol teams were deployed between 9.30 am and 11.00 am to observe water level conditions in locations identified as high-risk zones. The operation was carried out as a precautionary measure after heavy rain began around 6.30 am and continued for more than three hours.

Among the areas monitored were Jalan Mendu, Jalan Kampung Simpang Tiga and Kampung Kudei. Patrols were also conducted at the Kuching Waterfront along the Sarawak River, which is known to experience rising water levels during prolonged rainfall.

The department reported a slight increase in water levels in several monitored locations. However, authorities confirmed that the overall situation remains under control and does not currently pose a serious threat to residents.

Firefighters were seen conducting ground observations and assessing drainage systems to ensure that water flow remained manageable. These routine patrols are part of the department’s early response strategy to minimise the impact of flash floods, particularly in low-lying residential areas.

Kuching has experienced similar weather patterns in the past, especially during the monsoon season, when prolonged rainfall can lead to sudden water surges in rivers and drains. As such, early monitoring plays a crucial role in safeguarding lives and property.

Residents living near rivers and in flood-prone zones have been advised to remain alert and prepared. They are encouraged to monitor official announcements and be ready to move to safer areas should water levels continue to rise.

The Fire and Rescue Department has assured the public that it will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates if necessary. With weather conditions remaining uncertain, authorities emphasise the importance of community cooperation and readiness.

As heavy rain remains a recurring challenge in the city, proactive monitoring and swift action remain key to ensuring public safety in Kuching.
