BEKENU – A devastating fire broke out early Friday morning at Nelson Ningkan House, a longhouse situated along Jalan Sungai Saeh in Bekenu, leaving the entire structure reduced to ashes.
The incident has displaced 136 residents from 21 households, though no fatalities or injuries were reported.
Authorities confirmed that the blaze completely destroyed the 21-door longhouse, which was home to dozens of families.
The Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) in Subis District was quickly deployed to the scene to assess the situation and provide immediate assistance to those affected.
Emergency teams worked to gather information on the victims and coordinate relief efforts. In the aftermath, APM Subis distributed 21 food kits to the affected families to ensure basic sustenance while longer-term support was arranged.
Officials highlighted that the distribution was part of an initial response to stabilise conditions for the displaced residents.
The incident underscores the vulnerability of traditional longhouses, which are often built from timber and can be highly susceptible to fire.
Similar cases have been reported across Sarawak in recent years, with authorities repeatedly urging communities to adopt fire prevention measures and improve safety awareness.
Local leaders have expressed concern about the impact on families who have lost their homes and belongings.
Community organisations are expected to step in with additional support, while government agencies continue to monitor the situation.
The Civil Defence Force has also reminded residents that emergency assistance can be reached through its hotline at 085-430389 or 999.
The destruction of Nelson Ningkan House represents not only a loss of shelter but also a blow to cultural heritage, as longhouses remain a central part of Sarawak’s identity and communal living traditions.
Recovery efforts will likely involve both immediate relief and longer-term rebuilding initiatives, with authorities stressing the importance of community resilience in the face of such disasters.
Residents of Bekenu and surrounding areas have been urged to remain vigilant, particularly during the dry season when fire risks are heightened.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of preparedness and the role of collective action in safeguarding communities.
