KUCHING – Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) assembly members and party leaders reaffirmed their commitment to unity and Sarawak’s development agenda during the coalition’s 2026 Backbenchers Night, held on 21 October following the conclusion of the state legislative assembly sitting.

The event, themed “One for All, All for One: Sarawak First”, brought together GPS representatives and leaders after the Second Meeting of the Fifth Session of the 19th Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN), which lasted eight days.

Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg also attended the gathering, which provided an opportunity for representatives to reflect on their responsibilities and the importance of cooperation in pursuing the state’s development priorities.

In remarks shared following the event, one of the participating assembly members highlighted unity as an important factor in GPS’s ability to work towards common objectives.

The representative said the coalition’s strength depended not only on the individual responsibilities of its members but also on their shared commitment to the interests of Sarawakians.

The assembly member noted that GPS representatives came from different constituencies and brought varied backgrounds and experiences to their roles.

Despite those differences, the representative said they shared a common objective of supporting Sarawak’s development and ensuring that the state’s priorities continued to receive attention.

The message also emphasised the need for elected representatives to remain prepared to fulfil their respective duties.

Regardless of the responsibilities assigned to them, GPS members were encouraged to contribute actively to the implementation of development plans and to work collectively towards the state’s objectives.

The gathering followed eight days of legislative proceedings during which assembly members had the opportunity to participate in debates and discuss matters concerning Sarawak.

The end of the sitting marked a transition from the formal proceedings of the state legislature to a gathering focused on relationships and cooperation among members of the governing coalition.

Backbenchers Nights provide a setting for representatives to meet outside the formal legislative chamber. Such events can offer opportunities for members to exchange views, strengthen working relationships and discuss shared priorities, although the gathering itself was not presented as a formal policy announcement.

The participating assembly member also expressed appreciation to fellow colleagues for their commitment and cooperation.

Reflecting on the relationships formed through political work, the representative observed that while politics brings people together, friendship helps sustain their unity.

The event’s theme, “One for All, All for One: Sarawak First”, underscored the message that collective effort should remain central to the coalition’s work.

The remarks called for continued cooperation among representatives from different constituencies as they carry out their responsibilities.

The gathering concluded with a call to maintain the spirit of solidarity and shared purpose in supporting Sarawak’s future development.

The representative expressed hope that the principle of working together would continue to guide GPS members as they pursue their respective duties and contribute to the state’s development agenda. — Sarawak Daily
