KUCHING – The Sarawak United National Youth Organisation (SABERKAS) organised 66 programmes across unit, branch and state levels between July 1 and September 30, reflecting its range of activities in youth development, sports, community welfare and entrepreneurship.
SABERKAS president Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah announced the figures following the organisation’s 61st Sarawak Supreme Committee meeting in Kuching on October 22. The three-month reporting period followed the organisation’s general meeting.
Of the 66 programmes conducted during the period, 43 were organised independently by SABERKAS, while the remaining 23 were carried out in collaboration with strategic partners. These included the Sarawak Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development.
The figures indicate that the organisation delivered activities through both its own structures and partnerships with other institutions.
Such collaborations provide a means for youth organisations to coordinate initiatives, share resources and support activities across different communities.
According to Abdul Karim, seminars, workshops, meetings and briefings accounted for the largest category, with 27 programmes conducted under these areas. A further 17 programmes focused on sports, recreation and cultural activities.
Another 20 programmes covered social issues, entrepreneurship and welfare, while two were dedicated to women’s affairs. Together, the four categories accounted for all 66 programmes recorded during the three-month period.
The distribution shows that SABERKAS’s activities extended beyond conventional youth engagement, incorporating community-related initiatives and opportunities associated with enterprise development.
Sports, recreation and cultural programmes also formed a substantial part of its work, providing additional avenues for participation at the local and state levels.
The figures cover activities undertaken by the organisation between July and September, although a detailed breakdown by district, individual branch, attendance or programme expenditure was not provided in the announcement.
The reported total therefore outlines the scale and range of activities rather than their individual reach or measured outcomes.
Abdul Karim also reported that SABERKAS had 57,928 regular members across 82 branches throughout Sarawak.
The membership figure provides an indication of the organisation’s existing network and its presence across the state, although no comparative figures were given to establish whether membership had increased or decreased over the reporting period.
In addition to its branch network, SABERKAS maintains clubs at several higher education institutions. These include Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), Cyber College Kuching, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Swinburne University of Technology, ICATS and SEGi College.
The presence of clubs in higher education institutions provides an organisational structure through which students can participate in activities alongside the wider membership.
However, the announcement did not specify the number of student members involved, the frequency of campus-based activities or the individual contributions made by each institution.
SABERKAS’s reported programme schedule and membership figures offer a snapshot of its activities and organisational reach in Sarawak.
Further details on participation, programme outcomes and future initiatives would provide a clearer picture of how its activities contribute to youth engagement and community development across the state. – Sarawak Daily
