KUCHING – Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has declined to disclose when the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) will be dissolved, saying the date remains unknown to him amid speculation surrounding the next state election.

He said the current DUN term runs until February 2027, while stopping short of indicating when the dissolution would take place to pave the way for the 13th Sarawak State Election.

“Even now, I still do not know when the DUN will be dissolved. However, the current term does indeed run until February 2027,” he said.

Abang Johari made the remarks while speaking at the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) Backbenchers Night at the Sheraton Hotel in Kuching on Wednesday.

Speculation over the timing of the dissolution has circulated as Sarawak approaches the end of the current assembly term. However, the Premier’s comments provided no confirmation of a specific date for the next electoral process.

The dissolution of the DUN would clear the way for the 13th state election, in which voters will elect representatives to the state assembly. Until an official decision is announced, the timing of the dissolution remains unconfirmed.

Abang Johari, who is also GPS chairman, said the state government’s priority remained the pursuit of prosperity for Sarawak and the benefit of future generations.

He stressed that Sarawak belonged to all its residents, emphasising the importance of peace and harmony as the state continued its development.

“This is our home; therefore, we are building it so that its inhabitants may always live in peace and harmony,” he said.

He also expressed hope that residents would live long enough to witness the state’s future development and progress.

“We hope that everyone is blessed with a long life, so that they may witness all the development and progress that this state will achieve in the future,” he added.

His remarks placed the emphasis on Sarawak’s longer-term development goals rather than the immediate question of election timing. The Premier reiterated the government’s commitment to building a state where its residents could live peacefully while benefiting from continued progress.

With the current DUN term running until February 2027, the dissolution date remains a key unanswered question for the state’s political landscape. Abang Johari’s comments, however, offered no indication of when the formal process leading to the next state election would begin. — Sarawak Daily
