KUCHING – The Hak Kitak Programme has been launched in Sarawak to boost students’ understanding of their legal rights, particularly regarding bullying, cyber safety, and the challenges of today’s digital environment.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof explained that while the programme primarily targets students, it also involves teachers, parents, and community leaders to ensure a comprehensive approach to legal literacy.
“Naturally, the focus is on students because the programme aims to raise awareness and help them understand their rights from a legal perspective. Legal literacy is key, especially in knowing how to file complaints if they become victims, particularly in bullying cases,” he said after officiating the programme at SMK Tunku Abdul Rahman.
Organised by the Tan Sri Professor Ahmad Ibrahim Foundation, the initiative equips young people with the skills to recognise and respond to legal issues in their daily lives.
Datuk Amar Fadillah, who is also the Petra Jaya Member of Parliament, highlighted that rapid technological developments, including artificial intelligence and the expansion of the digital world, have created increasingly complex social challenges.
He noted that cybercrime and cyberbullying are growing concerns, with some victims experiencing severe psychological distress.
He warned that cyberbullying pressures have, in certain cases, led to tragic suicides, underscoring the urgent need for awareness and preventive measures.
“Awareness is essential. We must teach them how to lodge complaints if incidents occur, cope with the pressure, and understand their legal rights,” he stressed.
The Hak Kitak Programme provides students with a platform to build confidence in asserting their rights while fostering collaboration among schools, families, and communities to create safer environments.
By promoting legal literacy, the initiative empowers young Sarawakians to navigate modern challenges with resilience and informed decision-making.
