Dato Sri Huang Engages Sarikei NGOs on Cultural & Sports Development

SARIKEI — Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Dato Sri Huang Tiong Sii reinforced ties with Sarikei’s civil society through back-to-back courtesy visits from prominent local organizations on Wednesday. The Repok Assemblyman and Sarikei MP pledged continued support for cultural preservation and sports development during the engagements.

The Ling Clan Association (Sarikei Branch) delegation, led by Chairman Ling Kuong Kiu, formally invited Huang as guest of honor for their September 26 Mooncake Festival celebration – a key event preserving Chinese heritage in the 3rd, 6th, and 7th Divisions. Separately, Sarikei Division Billiards Association Chairman Elvis Wong Teck Chuan secured Huang’s participation for the July 16 opening of the Sarawak Closed Snooker Championship 2025, with the minister allocating special funds to support the tournament.

“These partnerships exemplify our shared commitment to community enrichment,” stated Huang, highlighting four priority areas: education, cultural continuity, athletic development, and social cohesion. The minister noted the billiards championship’s role in nurturing youth talent, while the Mooncake Festival strengthens intergenerational cultural transmission among Sarikei’s Chinese community.

Huang’s dual role as environmental deputy minister and local representative allowed discussions to span ecological sustainability initiatives alongside cultural-sports development. The meetings occurred amid preparations for Sarikei’s 60th anniversary as a township, with both events forming part of the commemorative calendar.
