Husband and Wife Injured as Car Skids and Catches Fire in Miri

MIRI: A husband and wife sustained injuries after the car they were travelling in skidded and burst into flames near the SK Merbau traffic lights in Desa Murni, Miri, this evening.

A spokesperson from the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department’s (JBPM) Operations Centre (PGO) stated that they received an emergency call at 5.33 pm. A team from the Lopeng Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) was immediately dispatched to the scene.

“The accident involved a Proton Persona that was 90 percent burned. It was a self-inflicted accident after the vehicle crashed into a tree on the roadside,” the spokesperson said.

Passersby acted quickly and managed to rescue the injured couple, aged 31 and 32, before the authorities arrived. The victims were then transported to Miri Hospital by ambulance for medical treatment.

Upon arrival, firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze using two auxiliary hoses, drawing water from the fire engine’s tank. Their swift action ensured the fire was completely put out.

The firefighting operation concluded at 6.10 pm, with authorities reminding the public to drive cautiously, especially in areas prone to accidents.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the accident. Motorists are urged to remain alert and ensure their vehicles are in good condition before driving.
