KUCHING — The International Conference on Advanced Applied Science and Sustainability 2025 (ICAAS 2025) officially opened in Kuching on Wednesday, reinforcing Sarawak’s commitment to technological innovation and sustainable development.
Jointly organised by Universiti Teknologi Sarawak (UTS), the Sarawak Timber Industry Development Board (STIDC), and Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), the high-level academic event was officiated by STIDC General Manager Zainal Abidin Abdullah.
In his address, Zainal emphasised the critical importance of collaboration across scientific and technological sectors to achieve sustainability goals.
“ICAAS 2025 is an important platform in strengthening scientific and technological collaboration networks for sustainable development,” he stated.
He highlighted Sarawak’s natural wealth — including tropical rainforests and rich biodiversity — as a blessing that must be managed responsibly to ensure its preservation for future generations.
Aligned with the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030), the conference aims to promote a balanced approach to development across economic, social, and environmental dimensions — especially in the face of global challenges like climate change.
“This year’s theme, ‘Innovating for a Sustainable Future: Integrating Advanced Applied Sciences for Global Impact’, showcases our joint commitment to address global issues through research and technology,” he added.
ICAAS 2025 saw participation from over 140 attendees, including 67 local and 8 international presenters. The conference featured:
- 75 paper presentations (including 14 each on wood science, food science, and engineering)
- 10 online sessions
- 10 poster presentations
- 13 video recordings
Zainal also urged all stakeholders to work hand in hand in preserving and developing Sarawak’s natural assets to maintain global competitiveness.
He expressed gratitude to the organisers, participants, and special guests, including UTS Vice-Chancellor Prof. Datuk Dr. Khairuddin Ab. Hamid, for their contribution to the event’s success.
“Together, let us shape a greener, more prosperous and innovative future for Sarawak for the well-being of present and future generations,” he concluded.
