Marinescu Secures Second Term as IESF President, Sarawak’s Afiq Joins Global Board

KUALA LUMPUR – The International Esports Federation (IESF) has reappointed Vlad Marinescu as its 10th President for a second term, reaffirming global confidence in his leadership during the organisation’s 17th Ordinary General Meeting (OGM).

The meeting, held in conjunction with the World Esports Championship Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) Finals, brought together delegates from across the world to review governance priorities, athlete development strategies and international cooperation for the coming year.

Marinescu’s re-election was strongly supported by member federations, reflecting his continued influence in shaping the federation’s direction.

A historic milestone was also achieved for Malaysia, with Afiq Fadhli Narawi from Sarawak elected to the IESF Board for 2026. His appointment marks the first time a Sarawakian has secured a seat at the federation’s highest level, signalling the region’s growing presence in the global esports’ arena.

Other elected board members include HRH Prince Omar Faisal of Jordan, Elin Yoojung Moen of Norway, Clint Kennedy of the United States, and Flip De Bruyn of Namibia. Together, the new board represents a diverse mix of leadership aimed at strengthening international collaboration in esports.

Afiq described his appointment as an honour for both Sarawak and Malaysia, pledging to focus on governance, commercial growth and inclusive pathways for players and organisers. He emphasised that his role would help elevate grassroots development while creating international opportunities for Sarawak’s youth.

“This position allows me to contribute towards strengthening governance and promoting inclusive growth. It is also a chance to showcase Sarawak’s talent on the global stage,” Afiq said.

The OGM concluded as the MLBB finals continued, reinforcing IESF’s mission to unite nations and advance the global esports ecosystem. The dual significance of the event, governance decisions alongside competitive play, highlighted the federation’s commitment to balancing organisational priorities with athlete-centred initiatives.

For Sarawak, Afiq’s achievement represents a breakthrough moment, offering new visibility for the state’s esports community and inspiring young players to pursue opportunities in the international arena.
