Sarawak Expands Inclusive Kalamullah Programme for Disabled Community

KUCHING – The Inclusive Kalamullah Programme with Disabled People (OKU) will be expanded across Sarawak, ensuring that the Quran can be accessed and appreciated by all members of society regardless of ability.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Sarawak Islamic Council (MIS), was announced by its President, Datuk Misnu Taha, during the programme’s adjournment ceremony on Monday.

He explained that the programme provides opportunities for disabled individuals to read and understand the Quran through diverse methods such as braille, sign language, and other suitable approaches.

“Some use braille, some use sign language and there are other methods. However, the point is that the Quran is still appreciated, read, and in the heart. The method of reading is not an obstacle, the important thing is the appreciation itself. Even if they cannot read aloud or fluently, each individual can still access the Quran according to their own ability,” he said.

Datuk Misnu added that Quran recitations tailored for disabled groups will also be organised next year, further strengthening inclusivity in religious practice.

To support this effort, MIS has allocated RM50,000 to print free braille Qurans for distribution to disabled individuals.

This measure ensures that the holy book can be read in multiple formats, reflecting the council’s commitment to accessibility and inclusivity.

The ceremony was attended by several key figures, including Datu Khalidi Ibrahim, Shariah Reference Expert of the Sarawak Mufti Department and Chairman of the Management Committee of the Darul Hana MIS Al-Quran Centre; Zaidi Sarkawi, Kuching Division District Officer; Husaini Hamdan, Committee Member of the Darul Hana Al-Quran Centre; Mohamad Shalahudin Marzuki, Chief Executive Officer of the Darul Hana MIS Al-Quran Development Centre; and Tazudin Mohtar, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Darul Hana MIS Al-Quran Centre.

The expansion of the Inclusive Kalamullah Programme reflects Sarawak’s broader commitment to religious inclusivity and social welfare.

By ensuring that disabled communities have access to the Quran in formats suited to their needs, the initiative strengthens the state’s vision of unity and respect across diverse groups.

Observers note that such programmes not only empower individuals but also foster greater awareness of inclusivity within society.

The expansion is expected to enhance Sarawak’s reputation as a state that values accessibility in religious practice and community development.
