The 34,000-seat temporary Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, built in Eisenhower Park, East Meadow on Long Island, saw a sellout crowd on Sunday. Fans traveled from far and wide, with the USA co-hosting the T20 World Cup alongside the West Indies, also featuring matches in Lauderhill, South Florida, and Dallas.
This fixture is the marquee game of the group stage, bringing India and Pakistan face to face in a contest that resonates well beyond cricket. Despite political tensions and security concerns often limiting their encounters, the fans remained in high spirits, even as rain delayed the start of the match.
For the Indian community in the United States, the tournament offers a rare chance to watch their cricket heroes live. Kumar Mathuria from New York expressed his excitement, stating, “It’s in our backyard, so there is nothing like it. We are lucky to have this amazing ground built just for this event.”
Fans from across the globe, including some from India, flocked to the venue, creating an electric atmosphere. Traders sold jerseys of both teams, and Pakistan fans proudly waved their national flag from SUVs.
Pakistan supporter Eswar Malik, who flew from Saint Louis, likened the rivalry to well-known American sports rivalries such as Yankees-Red Sox. This high-profile game is the fifth at the venue but the first to sell out, evident from the long security lines and parking confusion.
Secondary market tickets were still available, but last-minute buyers faced prices over $1,500 for general admission. Inside the stadium, the ‘New York’ signage was the only reminder of the venue, as the music and pre-game activities catered to the fans of both countries.
A huge roar erupted when former Indian great Sachin Tendulkar was introduced during the pre-game interviews. Siddarth Kadavarthi, who drove 10 hours from North Carolina, shared his excitement at seeing Indian legends Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, potentially in their last tournament.
“This is simply one of the biggest events in sports,” beamed Mutharia, capturing the sentiment of the many fans present.
