BAU – Police in Bau have detained three individuals following an operation targeting migrant smuggling activities.
The arrests were made on 24 April 2026 at approximately 5.30 pm during Op Tiris, conducted by officers from the Batu Kawa Battalion 11.
The suspects were intercepted at a petrol station along Jalan Tasik Biru. A black Perodua Myvi in which they were travelling was inspected, leading to the discovery that two of the passengers did not possess valid travel documents.
The third suspect was found with a passport. Initial enquiries revealed that all three were Indonesian nationals.
Investigators believe one of the suspects acted as a transporter, allegedly receiving RM500 to move the two undocumented individuals from near the Biawak border to Kuching.
Authorities suspect that the pair entered Malaysia through an illegal crossing route commonly referred to as “jalan tikus”. Police seized the vehicle, three mobile phones, and other items to assist in the investigation.
The case is being pursued under Section 26 of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants (ATIPSOM) Act 2007, as well as Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.
All three suspects remain in custody while investigations continue. Authorities are working to determine whether the incident is linked to a wider network or organised syndicate operating in the region.
The Bau District Police Chief, PISUPT Mohd Haide bin A. Rahman, issued a stern reminder to the public, warning against involvement in migrant smuggling or assisting foreigners without valid documentation.
He stressed that strict legal action will be taken against anyone found participating in such activities.
Police have also appealed to residents to provide information if they encounter suspicious movements or activities related to migrant smuggling in their communities.
Officials emphasised that public cooperation is vital in ensuring the safety and security of the district.
The arrests highlight ongoing challenges faced by enforcement agencies in Sarawak, particularly in border areas where illegal crossings remain a concern.
Authorities continue to intensify operations under Op Tiris, aimed at curbing smuggling and safeguarding national security.
