BETONG – Police in Betong have arrested a 34-year-old man during a narcotics enforcement operation on 20 April 2026.
The arrest was carried out by the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division of the Betong District Police Headquarters (IPD Betong) at around 12.00pm.
The suspect was detained in the Betong area on suspicion of involvement in drug-related activities. He was taken to IPD Betong for further investigation.
A urine test conducted at the Narcotics Division office confirmed that the man tested positive for both amphetamine and methamphetamine.
Authorities revealed that a review of past records showed the suspect had no prior criminal or drug-related history.
Despite this, police emphasised that the offence is being investigated under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a penalty of up to RM100,000 in fines or imprisonment of up to five years if convicted.
In addition, the suspect faces charges under Section 15 of the same Act, which could result in a fine not exceeding RM5,000 or imprisonment of up to two years.
Betong District Police Chief DSP Wan Mohamad Ali bin Wan Malek stated that the police take drug offences seriously and will not compromise when dealing with such cases.
He urged members of the community to assist law enforcement by providing information related to drug activities in the district.
“Drug offences pose a serious threat to society, and the police will continue to intensify operations to curb this problem. We appeal to the public to come forward with information that can help us in our efforts,” DSP Wan Mohamad Ali said in the statement.
The police have provided a contact number for the Betong Police Station at 083-472345 for members of the public to report any suspicious activities.
Authorities reiterated that community cooperation is vital in tackling drug-related issues and ensuring the safety of residents.
