SARATOK – Police in Saratok have arrested two men following a special screening operation after both tested positive for drugs during separate checks in Saratok and Kabong.
District Police Chief DSP Mathew Manggie confirmed that the operation, which began at around 2.00 pm on 11 May 2026, was conducted by the Saratok IPD Task Force.
The initiative followed public information received regarding suspected drug abuse activities in the district.
According to police, officers carried out checks on two men believed to be drug users at different locations.
Both suspects were taken to the Saratok Police Station for urine screening, which later confirmed positive results for amphetamine and methamphetamine.
The first suspect, a 21-year-old man from Niah, tested positive for both substances. The second suspect, aged 26 and from Kabong, also recorded the same results. Police reported that the arrests were made without incident.
The case is now being investigated under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which covers offences related to consuming drugs.
If convicted, offenders may face imprisonment of up to two years, a fine not exceeding RM5,000, or immediate supervision for a period not exceeding three years.
DSP Mathew Manggie stressed that police will continue to intensify operations such as Op Tapis in hotspot areas to curb drug-abuse activities.
He urged the public to remain vigilant and to provide information that could assist authorities in tackling the issue.
Drug abuse remains a pressing concern across Sarawak, with law enforcement agencies conducting regular operations to dismantle networks and reduce the availability of illicit substances.
Authorities have reiterated that community cooperation is vital in ensuring the success of these efforts.
The arrests in Saratok highlight the ongoing challenges faced by police in addressing narcotics-related crimes, particularly in smaller districts where community vigilance plays a crucial role.
