SRI AMAN – The Sri Aman District Police Headquarters (IPD Sri Aman), in collaboration with the Sri Aman Division Social Welfare Department (JKM Sri Aman), carried out a special operation known as Op Gelandangan at the Tokong Cina area along the Sri Aman Waterfront on 6 April 2026.
During the operation, officers discovered a 46-year-old local man believed to be suffering from mental illness. Authorities immediately took action to ensure his safety and wellbeing.
The individual was handed over to the Social Welfare Department for further assistance before being referred to Sri Aman Hospital for medical examination and psychiatric evaluation.
Following the hospital’s assessment, the man was safely reunited with his family in Betong later the same day. Officials confirmed that the coordinated response ensured the individual received appropriate care while also addressing his welfare needs.
The operation reflects the ongoing efforts of police and welfare agencies to address homelessness and vulnerable individuals in public spaces.
Authorities emphasised that such initiatives are not only about enforcement but also about providing support and rehabilitation for those in need.
Police have urged members of the public to continue cooperating by reporting cases of homelessness or individuals requiring welfare assistance in their communities. Early reporting, they stressed, allows agencies to respond quickly and provide the necessary intervention.
Homelessness and mental health challenges remain pressing issues across Sarawak, particularly in urban centres where vulnerable individuals often gather in public areas.
Programmes like Op Gelandangan demonstrate the importance of collaboration between law enforcement and social welfare agencies in tackling these challenges.
The Sri Aman District Police reaffirmed their commitment to community safety and welfare, highlighting that public cooperation is vital in ensuring that vulnerable individuals receive timely help. Authorities also reminded residents that compassion and vigilance are key to building a safer and more caring society.
