JAIS Conducts Halal Awareness Training for Kuching SMEs in 2026

KUCHING – The Sarawak Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) organised a comprehensive Halal Awareness Training session for local entrepreneurs and industry representatives at the Majma Tuanku Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah building on 26 February 2026.

The programme, held on Level 11 of the government complex, attracted 42 participants from various sectors, including small and medium enterprises, halal certificate applicants, and food and consumer product companies.

This training initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the state’s halal ecosystem. Recent reports indicate Sarawak has been actively expanding halal certification accessibility for local businesses

The session focused on enhancing understanding of the Halal Toyyiban concept, which encompasses both religious compliance and principles of cleanliness and safety in food production.

Participants received detailed guidance on certification requirements outlined in the Malaysian Halal Certification Procedure Manual (MPPHM) issued by the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (JAKIM) in collaboration with JAIS.

Key topics covered included halal principles from a syara’a perspective, premises requirements, and raw material compliance standards. The training also addressed responsibilities of Malaysian Halal Certification Certificate (SPHM) holders.

This initiative aligns with broader state efforts to support local entrepreneurs entering the halal market. The Sarawak Islamic Council has previously announced reduced certification fees of approximately RM200 for two years to encourage applications

Officials have emphasised that proper halal certification is essential for businesses advertising Ramadan-related promotions and food services

The department has issued warnings to food and hospitality operators about obtaining proper certification before such campaigns.

The public can verify halal status of premises through the JAIS Jejak Halal application or by contacting the department directly. This digital tool enhances transparency and consumer confidence in certified establishments.

Sarawak has been strengthening its halal governance framework through various training programmes. Previous technical and audit training sessions have included site visits to certified facilities such as Sara-Bif

The halal industry presents significant opportunities for Sarawak entrepreneurs seeking to expand into regional and global markets. Industry experts have urged local businesses to seize opportunities in the growing global halal sector

SME Corporation Malaysia and other agencies have developed comprehensive entrepreneurship programmes to encourage micro, small and medium enterprises to venture into higher value-added halal services

The training programme received positive feedback from attendees. Organisers expressed hope that such efforts would continue to strengthen integrity and competitiveness within Sarawak’s halal ecosystem.

Islamic agencies across the state have been working to expand halal certification coverage while maintaining rigorous standards. The collaborative approach between JAIS and JAKIM ensures consistency in certification procedures

Participants left the session equipped with practical knowledge about application processes and compliance requirements. The workshop demonstrated the state’s commitment to supporting businesses through educational initiatives.

This training represents one of several capacity-building programmes scheduled for 2026. The Sarawak Islamic Religious Department continues to prioritise entrepreneur development within the halal industry sector.
