MIRI – Two men and a woman sustained injuries after a four-wheel drive vehicle skidded and plunged into a ravine along Jalan Long Loyang last night.
According to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Operations Centre, the incident was reported through an emergency call at about 9.40pm. The caller informed authorities that the vehicle had fallen into a ravine in what was believed to be a self-inflicted accident.
Initial reports stated that one victim was trapped inside the vehicle but remained conscious despite injuries. Due to the remoteness of the location, it took the rescue team nearly five hours to reach the scene using a logging road.
JBPM confirmed that three individuals were involved – two men and a woman. The two male victims, who sustained injuries, were transported to the Long Lama Health Clinic for initial treatment. The female victim, however, remained in the vehicle when the report was first received.
“According to Long Loyang Health Clinic staff, efforts were still underway to free the female victim from the vehicle when information reached us,” the department said in a statement.
However, before the rescue team could carry out any extraction, they received an update at Pasar Lapok from the mother of the female victim. She informed authorities that her daughter had already been rescued by members of the public and rushed in a private vehicle to Beluru Hospital for further treatment.
No further rescue work was required at the scene, and the operation officially ended at 4.00am.
This accident highlights the dangers of travelling along rural logging roads, especially during nighttime. Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution when driving in such areas, particularly under wet or slippery conditions.
