KUCHING – The Jalan Matang expansion project has achieved 22 percent completion, with only a slight delay of 3.58 percent, largely due to the relocation of essential utilities. Despite this minor setback, the project is still projected to be completed ahead of the original schedule of August 2025.
Sarawak Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development, Datuk Ir. Aidel Lariwoo, said the delay stems primarily from large-scale utility relocation works, involving telecommunications and water infrastructure. These utilities are being permanently repositioned to support long-term infrastructure development strategies.
“This process requires careful coordination with relevant utility service providers. While it takes time, the rest of the construction is progressing well. Some sections are already completed and are awaiting only the final road surface,” he explained during a site visit to the project site on Friday.
Datuk Aidel expressed optimism that the project could be completed earlier than expected, potentially boosting traffic flow and accessibility for thousands of daily commuters along the busy route.
Meanwhile, Chief Political Secretary to the Sarawak Premier, Dato Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman, hopes the project can be expedited and completed as early as January or February 2025. The Tupong State Assemblyman also proposed new road developments to ease congestion along Jalan Matang.
Among his suggestions were constructing a new road from Simpang Malihah directly to the Fire and Rescue Academy (FAC) and another route connecting Malihah to Paroh, extending to Sungai Maong. He also noted that a new bridge might be necessary for the latter route, which could require significant investment.
“These alternative routes will provide residents with multiple access points and help reduce traffic pressure on Jalan Matang, especially during peak hours,” he said.
The proposal reflects ongoing efforts by Sarawak leaders to enhance infrastructure and address growing urban traffic demands in Kuching.
