BINTULU – The Jalan Tun Ahmad Zaidi intersection has officially reopened to motorists following the activation of its new traffic light system on Saturday, marking the completion of a long-awaited infrastructure upgrade.
The symbolic ceremony was officiated by Tanjong Batu State Assemblyman (ADUN), Ts. Johnny Pang Leong Ming, alongside representatives from the Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) and the project contractor.
As part of the event, temporary safety barriers were removed, allowing traffic to resume normal flow through the upgraded junction.
In his remarks, Ts. Johnny Pang expressed gratitude to the BDA and the contractor for their cooperation in ensuring the project was completed on schedule.
He emphasised that the reopening reflected the state government’s ongoing commitment to improving infrastructure and road safety in Bintulu.
“The reopening of this road reflects the continuous commitment of the state government and the authorities in improving infrastructure facilities and the safety of road users in Bintulu,” he said.
The assemblyman also reminded motorists to exercise caution, obey traffic signals, and practise safe driving habits to ensure smoother and safer journeys for all road users.
The upgrade of Jalan Tun Ahmad Zaidi, which involved converting the previous roundabout into a traffic light-controlled intersection, was undertaken to address congestion and improve traffic management in one of Bintulu’s busiest areas.
The project had required temporary closures and diversions in recent months, causing inconvenience to road users but paving the way for a more efficient traffic system.
According to earlier statements from the BDA, the new traffic light system is expected to reduce congestion significantly, particularly during peak hours, and enhance safety for both motorists and pedestrians.
Additional measures, including improved road markings and signage, have also been introduced to support the transition.
The reopening of the intersection is part of a wider series of infrastructure improvements in Bintulu aimed at supporting the town’s rapid growth and development.
With increasing traffic volumes linked to industrial and commercial expansion, authorities have prioritised road upgrades to ensure smoother connectivity and safer travel.
The Jalan Tun Ahmad Zaidi project is seen as a key step in addressing long-standing traffic bottlenecks, and its completion has been welcomed by residents and commuters who had faced delays during the construction period.
As Bintulu continues to expand as a major industrial hub, further infrastructure projects are expected to follow, reinforcing the state government’s pledge to deliver modern, efficient, and safe transport facilities for the community.
