BINTULU – The long-awaited upgrade of the Jalan Tun Ahmad Zaidi roundabout into a traffic light intersection is nearing completion and is scheduled to begin operations on 1 November.
The announcement was made by Tanjong Batu State Assemblyman (ADUN) Ir. Johnny Pang Leong Ming, who visited the project site with his People’s Service Centre team. He confirmed that the final touches are being carried out to ensure the system is ready for use on the specified date.
Pang emphasised that the new traffic light system is expected to provide significant relief to motorists who have endured heavy congestion in recent weeks due to temporary road closures. He urged the public to follow traffic signals once the system is operational to avoid confusion and ensure smooth traffic flow.
To support the transition, additional traffic police personnel will be deployed on the opening day to help manage vehicle movement and guide road users. Pang acknowledged that the construction phase, which included partial road closures, had caused severe congestion, particularly during peak hours, forcing many drivers to rely on alternative routes.
The opening of the Jepak Bridge earlier this year has contributed to a surge in traffic along Jalan Tun Ahmad Zaidi, further highlighting the need for the upgrade. Pang explained that the project not only introduces a traffic light system but also involves widening the road from two lanes to three and four lanes, which is expected to ease bottlenecks and improve overall traffic flow.
Although the entire project is scheduled for full completion by June next year, efforts are being made to accelerate progress. The contractor has increased manpower, extended daily working hours, and continued construction activities on weekends to meet deadlines.
During the implementation, several technical challenges such as drainage adjustments and pipe relocation were successfully resolved through close collaboration between the contractor and relevant government agencies.
Pang reiterated that the project forms part of his election manifesto to address worsening congestion in Bintulu. He expressed confidence that once completed, the upgraded road system will not only reduce traffic jams but also enhance safety and efficiency for daily commuters.
Also present during the site visit were representatives of the project contractor and officers from technical agencies involved in the works.
The Jalan Tun Ahmad Zaidi upgrade is one of several infrastructure initiatives in Bintulu aimed at improving connectivity and supporting the town’s rapid growth. With traffic volumes expected to rise further in the coming years, the project is seen as a crucial step in ensuring sustainable urban mobility.
