Japanese Students Join Tree Planting at Sabal Forest Reserve

SIMUNJAN – A tree planting programme at the Sabal Forest Reserve brought together international and local participants on 15 March 2026, highlighting the value of environmental conservation and cross-cultural cooperation.

The initiative took place in Simunjan and was organised by the Japan Malaysia Association in partnership with Insar Tours & Travel. Students from Gifu High School joined the programme alongside local participants.

During the activity, volunteers planted 360 saplings consisting of native Sarawak tree species. The selected varieties included lun, kapur bukit, and engkabang jantong, species known for their role in supporting biodiversity and maintaining ecological balance in the region’s forests.

About 60 people took part in the programme. Participants included Japanese high school students, members of the Japan Malaysia Association, students from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, and members of the local community. Their joint effort reflected a shared commitment to protecting forests and supporting sustainable environmental practices.

Organisers described the initiative as more than a reforestation activity. The programme also aimed to strengthen friendship between Malaysia and Japan while encouraging young people to care for the environment.

UDC Event 2026

The Sabal Forest Reserve is known for its rich biodiversity and remains an important conservation area in Sarawak. Tree planting activities support ongoing restoration work in degraded areas and help strengthen the resilience of local ecosystems.

Participants said the programme offered both educational and cultural value. The visiting students from Japan gained firsthand experience with Sarawak’s natural environment, while local participants welcomed the opportunity to collaborate with international partners.

The event reflects Sarawak’s broader focus on sustainability and community involvement. Conservation efforts combined with cultural exchange continue to create meaningful connections while supporting long-term environmental protection.
