KUCHING – Immigration authorities detained 18 Indonesian nationals during an enforcement exercise known as Ops Selera, carried out on Saturday morning, 16 May 2026, at several locations across Kuching.
The Kuching Immigration Enforcement Division deployed 18 officers for the operation, which targeted restaurant premises and residential houses suspected of employing or harbouring foreigners without valid documentation.
Areas covered included Taman Sukma, Kampung Semerah Padi, Tabuan, Pekan Batu 10, and a food court in Batu 4.
According to officials, the raids uncovered individuals working without proper permits and others residing illegally in residential properties.
During the operation, several foreigners attempted to flee to avoid arrest, but swift action by enforcement officers ensured all suspects were successfully detained.
The Immigration Department confirmed that the detainees will face further investigation under the Immigration Act 1959/63.
Offences include working without valid work passes, overstaying, and residing in Malaysia without proper authorisation. Employers found to be hiring or sheltering illegal immigrants are also subject to legal action.
Ops Selera forms part of the department’s ongoing strategy to intensify enforcement against immigration offences.
Authorities have emphasised that such operations are necessary to uphold national security, safeguard employment opportunities for locals, and maintain public order.
The department has reiterated its commitment to conducting regular enforcement activities across Sarawak.
By targeting both workplaces and residential areas, officials aim to dismantle networks that facilitate illegal employment and ensure compliance with immigration laws.
Local communities have expressed support for the initiative, noting that strict enforcement helps reduce risks associated with undocumented workers, including exploitation and unsafe working conditions.
Authorities have also urged employers to comply with regulations and ensure that all foreign workers possess valid permits.
The Immigration Department has assured the public that enforcement will continue aggressively and consistently, with a focus on protecting the welfare of citizens and maintaining the integrity of Malaysia’s immigration system.
