BINTULU – The Sarawak Road Transport Department (JPJ) has stepped up enforcement against overloaded vehicles through a joint operation with the JPJ Bintulu Branch.
The initiative, carried out on 28 April along Jalan Kidurong, involved the Mobile Weighing Unit conducting static checks on commercial transport.
During the operation, 35 goods and commercial vehicles were stopped and inspected. Authorities identified several violations, including excessive loading, unsafe load arrangements, and unauthorised modifications to vehicle structures and equipment. Each offence was addressed with enforcement action under existing road transport laws.
JPJ Sarawak emphasised that breaches involving heavy vehicles are taken seriously due to the potential risks they pose to road users.
Overloaded lorries and improperly secured cargo can lead to accidents, damage to road infrastructure, and increased hazards for smaller vehicles.
Officials reiterated that strict monitoring is necessary to safeguard public safety and maintain compliance with national transport regulations.
The operation reflects JPJ’s ongoing commitment to ensuring that commercial transport operators adhere to legal requirements.
Enforcement teams highlighted that technical offences, such as structural alterations and equipment tampering, undermine vehicle safety standards and contribute to dangerous conditions on the road.
Authorities also noted that similar operations will continue to be conducted across Sarawak. By intensifying checks, JPJ aims to deter non-compliance and encourage responsible practices among transport companies.
The department has consistently reminded operators that adherence to weight limits and safety standards is not only a legal obligation but also a moral responsibility to protect lives.
Road safety experts have long warned that overloaded vehicles increase braking distances, reduce manoeuvrability, and accelerate wear on tyres and suspension systems.
These factors heighten the risk of collisions, particularly on busy routes such as Jalan Kidurong, which serves as a major artery for industrial and commercial traffic in Bintulu.
JPJ’s enforcement strategy aligns with broader national efforts to strengthen road safety culture. By targeting high-risk behaviours among commercial drivers, the department seeks to reduce accident rates and promote sustainable transport practices.
The latest operation demonstrates that authorities are prepared to act decisively against offenders, reinforcing the message that compliance is non-negotiable.
The Sarawak JPJ has assured the public that such initiatives will remain a priority. With continued enforcement, the department hopes to instil greater discipline among transport operators and ensure that road safety standards are upheld across the state.
