KAPIT – The Road Transport Department (JPJ) Kapit Branch carried out an integrated enforcement operation on 14 July, targeting drug offences and foreign drivers. The initiative, known as Ops PEWA, was conducted in collaboration with the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) and the Malaysian Immigration Department (JIM) along Jalan Selirik.
The operation involved inspections of 200 vehicles of various categories. JPJ officers detected several violations, including the use of HID and LED lights that failed to meet specifications, driving without a valid licence, expired Motor Vehicle Licences (LKM), and breaches of Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (LPKP) permit conditions. Technical faults in vehicles were also identified. Enforcement action was taken against all offenders in accordance with current legislation.
AADK officers conducted drug screenings on 14 individuals during the operation. Four tested positive for methamphetamine, and further action was taken under AADK’s jurisdiction. Meanwhile, JIM reported no immigration-related offences during the exercise.
JPJ Sarawak expressed appreciation to both AADK and JIM for their cooperation and commitment in ensuring the success of the integrated operation. The department emphasised that such strategic partnerships are vital in strengthening compliance with road laws, combating regulatory violations, and safeguarding the well-being of road users across Sarawak.
The integrated approach reflects a broader effort to enhance road safety and public security. By combining resources and expertise, agencies are able to address multiple issues simultaneously, from traffic offences to drug abuse and immigration compliance. This multi-agency model has been increasingly adopted in Sarawak to ensure enforcement remains effective and comprehensive.
Road safety remains a pressing concern in Sarawak, where enforcement agencies continue to face challenges such as reckless driving, unlicensed motorists, and the use of modified vehicles. The inclusion of AADK in operations highlights the growing recognition of drug abuse as a factor contributing to unsafe driving behaviour. Methamphetamine use, in particular, has been linked to impaired judgement and increased accident risks.
The Kapit operation also underscores the importance of community awareness. Authorities have repeatedly urged drivers to comply with regulations, maintain valid licences, and ensure their vehicles meet safety standards. Public cooperation is seen as essential in reducing accidents and promoting safer roads.
JPJ Sarawak has pledged to continue strengthening integrated enforcement with partner agencies. Future operations are expected to expand in scope, covering more districts and targeting a wider range of offences. The department reiterated its commitment to protecting road users and ensuring that enforcement remains consistent and fair.
The success of Ops PEWA in Kapit demonstrates how coordinated action can deliver tangible results. By addressing both traffic and social issues, the operation contributes to a safer environment for all Sarawakians.
