SERIAN – The Kedup State Assembly Constituency has received a total allocation of RM2,493,000 to support church infrastructure projects and community programmes, reflecting the Sarawak Government’s continued commitment to strengthening local development.
The funds were channelled through the Other Religious Affairs Unit (UNIFOR) and Rural Small Projects (MRP) initiatives. A cheque presentation ceremony was held at the Kedup State Assembly Service Centre on Monday, officiated by Datuk Martin Ben, Deputy Minister of Food Industry, Commodities and Regional Development, who also serves as Kedup State Assemblyman. Around 40 recipients and community representatives attended the event.
Of the total allocation, RM2,325,000 was distributed via UNIFOR to 12 churches within the constituency. The funding will be used to carry out repair works and upgrade facilities, ensuring that places of worship remain safe, comfortable and conducive for congregants.
The initiative underscores the government’s broader effort to preserve the sustainability of houses of worship, which serve as both spiritual and community hubs.
Datuk Martin highlighted that UNIFOR’s support enables churches to undertake repair projects in a more structured and effective manner, aligned with the current needs of local communities.
He also emphasised accountability, noting that churches applying for new allocations must submit progress reports on completed or ongoing projects, with responsibility placed on the respective Church Chairman and Secretary.
In addition to church funding, MRP cheques were presented to 14 recipients, including associations, clubs and Village Development and Security Committees (JKKK).
These allocations are intended to strengthen grassroots initiatives and community programmes across Kedup.
Datuk Martin reiterated that the allocations reflect the government’s dual focus on supporting religious institutions and empowering local organisations.
He said such efforts are vital in fostering unity, improving facilities and enhancing the quality of life for residents in the constituency.
The ceremony marked another step in Sarawak’s ongoing strategy to channel resources towards both spiritual and social development, ensuring that rural areas continue to benefit from targeted support.
