KUCHING, 24 April 2025 — Sarawak took centre stage in Southeast Asia’s sustainability journey today as it officially opened the 33rd ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC) Council Meeting at the Sheraton Hotel, Kuching. The event gathered key ASEAN leaders and regional stakeholders to strengthen cooperation in tourism, heritage preservation, and cultural development.
Officiating the ceremony, Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari expressed Sarawak’s strong commitment to the ASEAN Community Vision 2045, which promotes economic integration, innovation, and people-focused progress.
In his keynote speech, the Premier highlighted Sarawak’s rich cultural diversity, strategic location, and environmental strengths, positioning it as a vital partner in ASEAN’s long-term growth plans.
“Through Malaysia’s active role in ASEAN, Sarawak is ready to help lead initiatives like the ASEAN Power Grid, boosting regional sustainability and connectivity,” he said.
The Premier also underlined Sarawak’s efforts in balancing development with environmental protection, saying the state’s green policies are deeply connected to its tourism and heritage sectors.
“Environmental preservation is not separate from culture—it is part of it,” he added. “We must pass down not only traditions but also a deep respect for nature to future generations.”
Also present were national and state-level leaders including Dato’ Sri Tiong King Sing, Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia; Dato’ Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Sarawak Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts; and ASEAN Secretary-General Dr. Kao Kim Hourn.
The meeting marks a milestone for regional cooperation as member countries and Timor-Leste representatives discussed ways to build a more united, culturally rich, and sustainably developed ASEAN. – Sarawakku
