KUCHING – A local woman was taken into custody during an overnight targeted traffic operation designed to combat motorists operating vehicles whilst intoxicated. The enforcement initiative took place along the busy stretch of Jalan Tabuan, stretching from late evening into the early hours of the morning.
The enforcement exercise was orchestrated by the Kuching District Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department. A team comprising eleven rank-and-file officers, spearheaded by a senior police officer, set up checkpoints along the designated route between 11:30 pm and 3:30 am to intercept erratic road users.
During the targeted checks, officers flagged down a 37-year-old local female motorist. Upon showing signs of impairment, she was subjected to a mandatory breathalyser screening using a calibrated SD2+ testing device to evaluate her breath-alcohol concentration.
The diagnostics revealed that the motorist had an estimated 186 milligrams of alcohol present per 100 milliliters of blood. This concentration represents a massive breach of the statutory driving limits enforced across the nation, promptimg officers to immediately detain the individual and escort her to the Kuching District Police Headquarters for booking.
Legal proceedings have been initiated against the suspect under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. This specific legal framework addresses individuals operating a motor vehicle while under the influence with levels exceeding the legally permitted threshold of 50 milligrams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood.
Under the stringent road safety laws of Malaysia, a conviction for this particular misdemeanor carries substantial penalties. If found guilty in a court of law, the individual faces a maximum prison sentence of up to two years, alongside heavy punitive fines ranging from a minimum of ten thousand Ringgit to a maximum of thirty thousand Ringgit, plus an automatic driving ban of no less than two years.
The comprehensive roadblocks resulted in the close inspection of 65 individuals and 62 distinct vehicles. The breakdown of checked transport included 25 standard cars, 18 motorcycles, 13 four-wheel-drive vehicles, and six multi-purpose vehicles, demonstrating the wide scope of the late-night dragnet.
Throughout the operational window, traffic personnel issued a grand total of 33 PDRM (K) 257 summonses to various drivers. These penalties were handed out on-site for an array of secondary traffic infractions discovered during the individual vehicle examinations.
District command staff have confirmed that these dedicated anti-drink-driving operations will remain a permanent fixture of their local policing calendar. Authorities underscored that regular, unannounced deployments are vital to driving down the occurrence of severe traffic collisions caused by impaired motorists.
