KUCHING, 21 April – The capital city of Sarawak is set to experience a complete transformation of its infrastructure, according to the Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg.
Speaking at the 2025 Aidilfitri Hospitality Ceremony organised by North Kuching City Hall (DBKU), the Premier reaffirmed the state government’s strong commitment towards developing Kuching into a modern, sustainable, and competitive city.

The Premier highlighted that Kuching’s infrastructure development is being carried out through strategic and thorough planning. This includes the introduction of the latest public transport technologies and a restructuring of city management systems to support future growth.
“We’re upgrading the infrastructure as mentioned by the Mayor – including highways and modern public transport systems like the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART). All of this requires careful planning and thorough execution,” he said.
Among the key projects already in progress are:
- The construction of an underpass in Darul Hana
- The widening of the road from Yayasan Sarawak roundabout to Damai
- A dedicated ART line to Damai, scheduled to begin construction this year
In addition, the Premier announced the construction of a new bridge across the Santubong River, which will connect the areas of Pantai Damai, Buntal, and Bako. This initiative is expected to create new housing opportunities and drive local economic growth.
“In Datuk Hazland Hipni’s area, a single bridge is being built to connect Kampung Beliong, along with comprehensive upgrades to the surrounding infrastructure,” he added.
On the topic of solid waste management, the state government plans to implement modern incinerator technology under a “waste to energy” system. This initiative will be divided into two major zones:
- Southern Zone: Kuching to Betong
- Northern Zone: Sibu to Miri
Datuk Len Talif Salleh has been entrusted to lead this crucial project aimed at ensuring long-term urban sustainability.
The event was also graced by the presence of several dignitaries including the Deputy Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Amar Prof. Dr. Sim Kui Hian, and Minister of Women and Family Development Malaysia, Dato Sri Nancy Shukri.
This ambitious plan marks a significant chapter in Kuching’s urban development and reflects Sarawak’s vision of embracing modernisation while improving quality of life for its people. – Sarawakku
