KUCHING – The Sarawak State Health Department has been officially recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records for organising the largest simultaneous circumcision event in the country.
The certificate presentation took place on 18 April 2026 during the ‘Speta Kamboh’ programme at Dewan Hikmah, Kuching.
The record-breaking achievement was set on 20 December 2025, when a total of 1,758 participants underwent circumcision across 22 Ministry of Health facilities in Sarawak. This surpassed the previous record of 1,200 participants, held by Pahang since 2017.
Mr Megat Faris Hussein bin Megat Muzaffar Shah, representing the Malaysia Book of Records, presented the certificate to Sarawak State Director of Health, Dr Veronica Lugah.
The ceremony was witnessed by YB Datuk Dr Haji Abdul Rahman Junaidi, Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department, who attended on behalf of the Sarawak Premier.
Also present were Dr Alex Kim Ren Jye, Deputy Medical Director of Sarawak General Hospital, representing the Hospital Director; Dr Nik Azim bin Nik Abdullah, former Head of Sarawak State Specialty (General Surgery); Mr Wan Samsulri Wan Hasbi, Deputy Director of Management of Sarawak General Hospital; and Mr Morshidi Sa-id, Private Secretary to Deputy Prime Minister II, Dato’ Sri Haji Fadilah Yusof.
The event highlighted Sarawak’s commitment to community health initiatives and the ability of its medical services to coordinate large-scale programmes effectively.
Officials noted that the success of the circumcision programme was made possible through strong collaboration between health facilities, staff, and community support.
Dr Veronica Lugah expressed appreciation for the recognition, emphasising that the achievement reflects the dedication of Sarawak’s healthcare professionals in delivering accessible and efficient services.
The award also underscores the state’s role in setting national benchmarks for public health programmes.
The Malaysia Book of Records accolade adds to Sarawak’s growing reputation for innovative and large-scale health initiatives, reinforcing the importance of teamwork and planning in achieving milestones that benefit the wider community.
