LIMBANG – A family in Kampung Bakol whose home gave way in a landslide on Friday evening has received immediate support from the Limbang Division Social Welfare Department (JKM).

According to Zakri Zainal, the collapse took place around 5.30 pm after prolonged heavy rainfall caused water levels to surge and destabilize the hillside.

Zakri and his wife were at his in-laws’ house in Kampung Pahlawan when the incident occurred, and no one was injured.

Agnes Tegala, a JKM representative, delivered emergency relief supplies to Zakri and his five family members as an interim measure.

The department said permanent aid credited directly to the family’s bank account will follow once a full eligibility assessment under the existing welfare scheme is completed. In the meantime, the family has arranged temporary accommodation with support from village leaders.

Landslides are a recurring threat in Sarawak’s monsoon season. Data from the AHA Centre notes that several such incidents displaced hundreds of families across the state in early 2025.

To address these emergencies, Sarawak activated four additional relief centres in Limbang and Lawas, housing over 300 evacuees as of March 9, 20252.

A spokesperson for the local security agency urged residents to stay alert for signs of unstable terrain or unusual water flow, emphasizing that “personal and family safety must come first. If there are signs of unstable ground, immediately contact the authorities.”
