LIMBANG – The Limbang Waterfront Riverbank Restoration Project has reached 79 percent completion and is on track to be fully delivered by 29 December 2025. The RM9.5 million initiative is designed to stabilise the riverbank, which had previously suffered from structural issues caused by slip failures, while also enhancing safety and supporting long-term development in the area.
The project is regarded as a key step in transforming Limbang into a more attractive and resilient town. Once completed, the restored riverbank will not only safeguard residents and infrastructure but also serve as a catalyst for tourism and local economic growth.
The Limbang Waterfront has long been a focal point for both residents and visitors, and the restoration is expected to elevate its role as a landmark destination.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg visited the site on Saturday to inspect progress.
He was accompanied by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, Deputy Minister of Transport Datuk Hasbi Habibollah, and Deputy Minister of Food Industry, Commodities and Regional Development Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Ismail. Their presence underscored the importance of the project as part of Sarawak’s wider development agenda.
Officials explained that the restoration works are not only focused on structural reinforcement, but also on creating a more organised and visually appealing riverside environment.
The upgraded waterfront is expected to feature improved landscaping, pedestrian-friendly areas, and facilities that can host community and cultural activities.
The project also ties into Sarawak’s broader tourism strategy. According to earlier reports, the Limbang Waterfront is part of a multiphase development plan that will eventually make it one of the longest waterfronts in Sarawak, stretching approximately 1.8 kilometres.
This larger vision, valued at over RM120 million, is being implemented in stages to ensure sustainability and long-term impact.
Deputy Minister Dr Abdul Rahman previously highlighted that the waterfront will serve as both a recreational space for residents and a tourism draw for visitors from neighbouring Brunei and beyond.
With Limbang’s strategic location in northern Sarawak, the project is expected to strengthen the town’s role as a regional hub for commerce and tourism.
When completed, the Sungai Limbang Waterfront will not only stand as a new landmark but also provide opportunities for small businesses, food vendors, and cultural showcases. The improved infrastructure is anticipated to boost local livelihoods while offering a safe and attractive environment for leisure and recreation.
The restoration project is therefore seen as a dual-purpose initiative: addressing critical safety concerns while simultaneously unlocking Limbang’s tourism and economic potential.
