SIBU, 7 May 2025 – A lorry carrying a load of oil palm fruits overturned early this morning at the busy Wong King Huo Roundabout, causing a scene of chaos as fruits scattered across the road and diesel oil leaked for several metres.
According to the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Sibu Zone, the incident happened at around 5.56am when they received an emergency call from the public. A team from the Sibu Sentral Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) was immediately dispatched, equipped with a Fire Rescue Tender (FRT) and Emergency Medical Response Services (EMRS).
Upon arrival, firefighters found the overturned vehicle had spilled diesel oil along a 50-metre stretch of the road, which posed a danger to other road users. The palm fruits, intended for delivery, were scattered all over the road and caused a traffic obstruction at the roundabout.
The JBPM Sibu Zone Chief, Andy Alie, said the oil spill was contained and cleaned up using sand to prevent accidents or fire hazards. He added that the lorry driver survived the incident with only minor injuries and was given treatment on-site by EMRS personnel.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation, but motorists using the route were advised to be cautious and avoid the area during the cleanup. The authorities were seen working hard to clear the road and restore traffic flow by mid-morning.
This incident highlights the importance of road safety, especially for heavy vehicle drivers navigating roundabouts during early hours when visibility may be lower.
