Aidilfitri 2026 Set for March 21, Says Keeper of the Seal
PUTRAJAYA, March 19 – Muslims across Malaysia will celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri on Saturday, March 21, 2026, following an official announcement made tonight.
The declaration was delivered live by the Keeper of the Seal of the Rulers, Tan Sri Syed Danial Syed Ahmad, in accordance with the command of His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and with the consent of the Conference of Rulers. The announcement brings clarity and certainty to millions of Muslims nationwide who have been awaiting confirmation of the date for the end of Ramadan.
“In order to fulfill the order of His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, after being approved by His Majesty the Rulers, I hereby declare that the date of Hari Raya Puasa for the States throughout Malaysia has been set for Saturday, March 21, 2026,” he said during the televised broadcast.
The determination of 1 Syawal 1447 Hijrah was made based on the established Imkanur rukyah criteria, a method that combines astronomical calculations and physical moon sighting. According to the criteria, the crescent moon must meet specific parameters at sunset. The altitude of the moon must not be less than three degrees, while the angular distance between the moon and the sun must not be less than 6.4 degrees.
Religious authorities conducted moon sighting activities at designated locations nationwide before the announcement was made. These observations are carried out every year to ensure that the Islamic calendar is observed accurately and uniformly across the country. The Imkanur rukyah method has long been practised in Malaysia and reflects a balanced approach between traditional rukyah practices and modern astronomical science.
With the official date confirmed, preparations for Aidilfitri are expected to intensify. Families will begin final arrangements for balik kampung travel, festive meals and prayers at mosques nationwide. The announcement also allows public and private sectors to finalise holiday schedules and operational planning ahead of the celebrations.
Hari Raya Aidilfitri marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan and is a significant religious occasion for Muslims. It is a time for forgiveness, family gatherings and strengthening community ties. As Malaysians prepare to welcome Syawal 1447H, the official confirmation ensures that the celebration will be observed in unity throughout the nation.
