ADDIS ABABA – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed Ali reaffirmed their commitment to elevate Malaysia-Ethiopia relations into a more strategic phase during a bilateral meeting in Addis Ababa this week.
The leaders first held a one-on-one discussion before leading their respective delegations in a comprehensive dialogue.
Both sides agreed to expand cooperation in trade, investment, human capital development, and new economic sectors, reflecting a shared determination to strengthen ties beyond traditional areas.
Malaysia welcomed Ethiopia’s support for establishing a regular consultation mechanism, aimed at ensuring consistent dialogue and smoother implementation of joint initiatives.
The framework will also encourage people-to-people exchanges, enhancing connectivity and mutual development between the two nations.
Anwar highlighted opportunities in artificial intelligence, semiconductors, the halal industry, and cybersecurity, noting that these sectors could serve as new pillars of cooperation.
He also pointed to the recently signed MoU between the chambers of commerce of both countries as a platform for expanding business partnerships.
Malaysia expressed readiness to open its market to Ethiopian companies while offering expertise in palm oil cultivation, quality seeds, and livestock feed production.
Anwar further proposed a review of import tariffs on Malaysian palm oil, which has been gaining traction in Ethiopia’s market.
Additionally, Malaysia is prepared to facilitate access to products such as chicken and bird’s nest, strengthening agricultural trade links.
Beyond trade, both governments agreed to deepen collaboration in tourism, education, health, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), and research. Malaysia also pledged continued support for Ethiopia’s economic reform agenda through the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP).
Anwar expressed appreciation for Ethiopia’s backing of Malaysia’s bid to join BRICS, while congratulating Addis Ababa on its selection to host COP32 in 2027, a recognition of Ethiopia’s leadership in advancing the global green agenda.
The meeting underscored the growing momentum in Malaysia-Ethiopia relations, coinciding with the reopening of Malaysia’s embassy in Addis Ababa earlier this year.
With both nations committed to building a prosperous, inclusive, and competitive future, the partnership is expected to deliver tangible benefits for their people and contribute to wider South–South cooperation.
