ADDIS ABABA – Malaysia’s Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim began his official three-day visit to Ethiopia with a symbolic stop at the Adwa Victory Memorial Museum, a landmark that commemorates Ethiopia’s historic triumph over Italian imperial forces in 1896.
The museum houses a rich collection of artifacts and paintings that document the courage, dignity, and steadfastness of the Ethiopian people during the Battle of Adwa, a defining moment in African history.
The victory, led by Emperor Menelik II and Empress Taytu Betul, not only safeguarded Ethiopia’s sovereignty but also became a powerful symbol of resistance against colonialism across the continent.
In his remarks, Anwar Ibrahim praised Ethiopia’s ability to elevate historical values and culture for the world.
“The victory in Adwa became a clear indication and inspired confidence and a source of strength to the various independence movements that followed and spread throughout the African continent. I salute Ethiopia for having a strong ability to elevate serious and solid historical values and culture for the entire world,” he said.
The Prime Minister underscored that the visit reflects Malaysia’s respect for Ethiopia’s heritage and its role as a strategic partner in Africa.
He noted that the Adwa legacy resonates with Malaysia’s MADANI Diplomacy framework, which emphasises inclusivity, respect, and shared struggles against oppression.
Diplomatic observers view the museum visit as a meaningful gesture, setting the tone for Malaysia-Ethiopia engagements during the mission.
It highlights Malaysia’s recognition of Ethiopia’s pivotal role in African history and its continuing influence as a hub for continental cooperation.
The Adwa Victory Memorial Museum remains a source of pride for Ethiopians and a beacon of inspiration for nations worldwide, symbolising resilience, unity, and the enduring fight for freedom.
