ADDIS ABABA – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has concluded his official visit to Ethiopia, marking the end of a historic engagement aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and expanding trade cooperation between Malaysia and the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.
The visit, which included a ceremonial welcome at Istana Negara, bilateral meetings with Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed Ali, and the signing of several key agreements, achieved its primary objective of opening new avenues for collaboration.
Among the highlights were memoranda of understanding covering aviation, health, tourism, and city-level cooperation, alongside discussions on trade, investment, technology, and humanitarian issues.
Anwar expressed his gratitude to the Malaysian delegation, including ministry officials, the embassy team in Addis Ababa, security personnel, and media representatives, for ensuring the smooth execution of every programme throughout the stay.
“This visit has achieved its main goal, which is to strengthen bilateral relations and open up wider trade cooperation between the two friendly countries,” he said.
The Prime Minister also acknowledged Ethiopia’s hospitality and reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to building long-term partnerships across Africa, particularly through the reopening of Malaysia’s embassy in Addis Ababa earlier this year.
With the Ethiopia leg of the trip complete, Anwar and his delegation are now en route to Johannesburg, South Africa, where Malaysia will participate in the G20 Summit.
The summit is expected to provide Malaysia with a platform to highlight its perspectives on global economic challenges, sustainable development, and South–South cooperation.
The Addis Ababa visit coincided with the 60th anniversary of Malaysia–Ethiopia diplomatic relations and the reopening of Malaysia’s embassy after more than four decades, underscoring the significance of this renewed partnership.
