Malaysia Launches IC Design Park 2 to Drive Semiconductor Growth

CYBERJAYA – Malaysia has taken a decisive step towards strengthening its position in the global semiconductor industry with the launch of the Malaysia Semiconductor IC Design Park 2, an initiative aimed at transforming the country into a world-class hub for chip design and development.

The project was officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who emphasised that the success of a nation depends on the efficiency and speed of reforms, particularly in industries that underpin the future economy. He described semiconductors as the “vital heart” of Malaysia’s economic transformation.

“This initiative encompasses a comprehensive plan that focuses on providing skilled manpower, establishing training and excellence centres, offering strategic incentives, and supporting facilities that strengthen the country’s semiconductor industry value chain,” Anwar said.

The Prime Minister stressed that Malaysia can no longer rely on outdated systems and must instead leap forward to position itself as a preferred destination for global investors.

He added that the IC Design Park 2 reflects Malaysia’s ambition to be recognised internationally as a hub for innovation and advanced technology.

The new facility forms part of a broader national strategy to move Malaysia beyond contract manufacturing into technology ownership and design leadership.

It includes the establishment of training centres, excellence hubs, and advanced testing facilities, ensuring that local talent is equipped to meet global standards.

A highlight of the launch was the unveiling of South-East Asia’s first Advanced Chip Testing Centre, located at CoPlace 9 in Cyberjaya.

The centre is expected to accelerate Malaysia’s transition into higher-value segments of the semiconductor supply chain, providing cutting-edge testing and validation capabilities.

The initiative also aligns with Malaysia’s Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, which prioritises digital transformation, innovation, and sustainable economic growth.

Officials noted that the IC Design Park 2 will serve as a catalyst for attracting foreign direct investment, while simultaneously nurturing local expertise.

To support the industry, the government has introduced a RM100 million fund dedicated to semiconductor development, signalling its commitment to building a robust ecosystem.

This includes partnerships with universities, research institutions, and global technology firms to ensure Malaysia remains competitive in the international market.

Industry observers believe that Malaysia’s proactive approach will strengthen its role in the global semiconductor supply chain, particularly as demand for chips continues to rise across sectors such as artificial intelligence, automotive, and renewable energy.

By combining infrastructure, incentives, and talent development, Malaysia aims to secure its place as a world-class semiconductor hub, ensuring long-term economic resilience and global recognition.
