KUCHING – The Malaysian Government is conducting a comprehensive feasibility study on adopting nuclear energy as part of its long-term energy strategy to ensure clean, affordable, and sustainable power nationwide.
Deputy Prime Minister and Acting Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, Dato Sri Fadillah Yusof, confirmed that while nuclear energy is under serious consideration, actual implementation may take a decade due to its complex requirements.
“We’ve appointed MyPower as the Nuclear Programme Office (NPO) to lead this study, which will examine all critical aspects including technology, safety, environmental impact, funding capacity, and public acceptance,” said Fadillah.
Speaking to media after inaugurating the MUSCS Pickleball Arena in Petra Jaya on Sunday, Fadillah said any move towards nuclear energy must adhere to 18 international agreements, and require regional cooperation with neighbouring countries like Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines, who are also exploring nuclear energy options.
Currently, Peninsular Malaysia remains heavily reliant on coal, gas, diesel, and hydropower, while Sarawak has achieved over 70% hydroelectric-based energy generation. Despite progress, Fadillah noted that renewable sources such as biogas, biomass, and biofuel remain insufficient to fulfil national demand.
“That’s why nuclear energy is being seriously studied as a viable option for long-term national sustainability,” he added.
One of the key considerations is identifying nuclear plant sites near large water bodies – rivers, oceans, or lakes – to support essential cooling systems.
Malaysia is also evaluating Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology due to its flexibility, scalability, and adaptability to remote regions.
To support decision-making, working visits have been conducted to countries including Russia, France, and South Korea, with upcoming trips planned to Japan, China, and the United States, focusing on technological security and cost-efficiency.
Also present during the event were Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier Department, Datuk Abdullah Saidol, President of MUSCS Recreational Sports Club, Datuk Dzulkarnaen Ahmad, and other dignitaries.
