PUTRAJAYA – Malaysia is intensifying efforts to position science, technology and innovation (STI) as the cornerstone of its economic resilience, with the government emphasising strategic planning and implementation to address global uncertainties.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, chairing the first National Science Council (MSN) meeting of 2026, highlighted the importance of STI in navigating financial challenges and the ongoing energy crisis linked to conflicts in West Asia.
He stressed that Malaysia must adopt a more effective approach to ensure long-term stability and growth.
The government is focusing on mission-based initiatives designed to optimise resources, stimulate sustainable economic expansion, and drive innovation-led development.
These initiatives are expected to strengthen Malaysia’s STI ecosystem, ensuring that research outcomes are translated into tangible benefits for citizens and the nation.
Anwar underscored the need for closer collaboration between the MADANI government, the private sector, and research and development (R&D) institutions.
Such synergy, he explained, is vital to ensure that scientific discoveries and technological advancements are not confined to laboratories but are applied to solve real-world problems and improve livelihoods.
The Prime Minister noted that STI is not only a driver of economic growth but also a key factor in enhancing Malaysia’s competitiveness in the global market.
By investing in high-value technology and innovation, the country aims to reduce dependency on external factors and build resilience against global economic shocks.
The MSN meeting also reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to fostering a culture of innovation across industries.
This includes encouraging private sector participation in R&D, supporting start-ups, and promoting knowledge transfer between academia and industry.
Officials emphasised that the government’s proactive stance on STI reflects its broader vision of sustainable development under the MADANI framework.
By aligning policies with innovation-driven strategies, Malaysia seeks to create a robust ecosystem capable of addressing both domestic and international challenges.
The Prime Minister concluded by reiterating that STI must remain central to Malaysia’s economic agenda, ensuring that the nation is well-prepared to face future uncertainties while delivering meaningful progress for its people.
