SIBU – The Malaysian Government has issued a strong directive to accelerate preparations for Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026), positioning the campaign as both a driver of international tourism and a platform to reinforce national unity.
Speaking at the Sibujaya Countdown 2025 event held at the Azman Hashim Community Sports Centre, Dato’ Sri Tiong King Sing, Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, highlighted the sector’s robust growth.
He revealed that visitor numbers between October and November had surged to nearly 80 million, far surpassing the initial target of 38 million and exceeding last year’s figures.
Malaysia is aiming to generate up to RM300 million in tourism-related revenue, with ambitions to attract more than 40 million international visitors by 2026.
“Fingers crossed, we hope that by 2026, Malaysia can attract more than 40 million international visitors,” said Tiong.
Beyond economic goals, the minister emphasised the importance of unity and inclusiveness in the VM2026 agenda.
He urged Malaysians to respect cultural and religious diversity, cautioning against turning traditional issues into political or religious disputes.
Tiong, who is also the Member of Parliament for Bintulu, pointed to events such as the Sibujaya Countdown as examples of how cultural promotion can foster harmony.
The programme featured traditional food, arts, youth activities, and modern attractions such as e-racing, reflecting Malaysia’s diverse and evolving identity.
“In promoting food and cultural heritage, I encourage all ethnic groups and states to showcase their own identity, including Malay, Iban, Bidayuh, Chinese and others, so that visitors can understand and respect the rich cultural heritage of the country,” he said.
The minister stressed that VM2026 is not only about tourism expansion but also about presenting Malaysia’s multicultural society to the world.
By encouraging participation from all communities, the campaign aims to strengthen bonds among Malaysians while offering international visitors a deeper appreciation of the nation’s traditions and modern lifestyle.
VM2026 is expected to serve as a cornerstone for Malaysia’s tourism strategy, combining economic growth with cultural diplomacy.
The government views the initiative as a vital opportunity to showcase Malaysia’s heritage, hospitality, and unity on the global stage.
