Man Charged with Ex-Wife’s Murder in Setapak Case

KUALA LUMPUR: A tragic case involving the death of a woman has taken a serious turn after her former husband was charged in court for her alleged murder. The incident, which happened in front of a condominium in Setapak last month, has drawn public attention due to its shocking nature and the circumstances surrounding it.

The accused, Aung Tun Ngwa, 26, an unemployed Myanmar national, was brought before the Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday. He appeared calm and nodded to indicate that he understood the charge when it was read out before Magistrate Nurul Izzah Hasan Basri. However, no plea was recorded as murder cases fall under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

According to the charge, Aung is accused of murdering his ex-wife, Merry Yet Ngwa, 33, who is also a Myanmar national. The incident reportedly took place at around 2.30pm on April 23 in front of Block 1, Genting Court Condominium, located in Taman Setapak Indah Jaya.

Investigations revealed that the victim is believed to have been stabbed by her ex-husband. An autopsy later confirmed that the cause of death was a stab wound to the chest. The case has raised concerns about domestic conflicts and the risks they may pose when they escalate beyond control.

The charge was framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code, one of the most serious offences in Malaysia. If found guilty, the accused could face the death penalty or imprisonment ranging from 30 to 40 years, along with a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane.

The court has set July 31 as the next date for mention of the case. The prosecution was handled by Prosecuting Officer Inspector M. Naresh Kumar, while the accused did not have legal representation during the proceedings.

Earlier reports on April 24 cited Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Datuk Fadil Marsus as confirming that authorities received information about the death of a Myanmar woman believed to have been attacked by her former spouse. The findings from the post-mortem strengthened the case against the accused.

This case serves as a serious reminder of the consequences of unresolved personal conflicts. As the legal process moves forward, the public will be watching closely for justice to take its course.
