Man Fined RM3,500 For Threatening Ex-Wife in Miri

MIRI – A thirty-nine-year-old man has been ordered to pay a fine of RM3,500 after admitting to issuing criminal threats against his former spouse and staff at a childcare centre. The Miri Magistrate’s Court delivered the sentence on 21 July 2026, following the defendant’s guilty plea to a charge under Section 506 of the Penal Code, which pertains to criminal intimidation.

The incident took place on the morning of 3 July 2026, at approximately 7.45 am. The accused arrived at a TABIKA (Community Childcare Centre) located in the Bekenu district, where his ex-wife was present. According to court proceedings, the man approached the complainant and demanded her mobile phone. When she refused to hand over the device, the situation escalated rapidly.

Instead of accepting the refusal, the accused launched into a series of menacing statements. He warned that the safety of all staff members and children within the premises would be compromised. Furthermore, he vowed to continue harassing them if his demands were not met. The aggressive nature of his conduct created an atmosphere of fear among those present, prompting immediate concern for the well-being of the vulnerable individuals at the centre.

Alarmed by the explicit threats and concerned for both personal safety and the security of the children under her care, the complainant wasted no time in seeking legal recourse. She lodged a formal police report shortly after the incident, detailing the events and the specific nature of the intimidation. The swift action by the victim ensured that law enforcement could investigate the matter promptly.

Section 506 of the Penal Code is designed to protect individuals from acts that cause alarm or distress through threats of injury to person, reputation, or property. In this case, the court found the evidence sufficient to warrant a conviction. The imposed fine serves as a judicial reminder that such behaviour, particularly when directed at former partners or in sensitive environments like schools, will not be tolerated.

In the wake of the sentencing, the Miri District Police Chief issued a public advisory urging citizens to exercise emotional restraint during interpersonal conflicts. Authorities emphasised that disputes, especially those arising from domestic or familial issues, must be resolved through proper legal channels rather than confrontation or intimidation.

The police chief highlighted that any form of threat that instils fear for another person’s safety constitutes a serious criminal offence. Such actions are subject to strict legal penalties, reflecting the state’s commitment to maintaining public order and protecting citizens from harassment. The message was clear: violence and intimidation are not acceptable methods of conflict resolution.

Members of the public are encouraged to remain vigilant and cooperative with law enforcement efforts. Anyone possessing information regarding criminal activities is urged to contact the Miri District Police Headquarters or visit the nearest police station without delay. Community cooperation remains a vital component in ensuring that peace and security are upheld across the district.

This case also sheds light on the challenges faced by staff in educational and childcare settings, who may occasionally become collateral targets in domestic disputes. It reinforces the need for robust security protocols and support systems for employees who find themselves in potentially volatile situations.

As the convicted man settles his fine, the case stands as a cautionary tale for others who might consider using threats as a tool for coercion. The judiciary’s decision underscores the importance of respecting legal boundaries and prioritising the safety of all community members, particularly children and those in caregiving roles.

Residents are reminded that help is available through various social and legal services, offering alternatives to confrontational behaviour.
