Man Remanded in Probe of Tragic Crash That Killed Marutin Pagan

SIBU: A 42-year-old Chinese man has been remanded for four days starting March 31 to assist in the investigation into the tragic accident that claimed the life of Sabah State Court Director, Marutin Pagan, 56.

Sibu District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Zulkipli Suhaili, confirmed today that the suspect had been arrested and is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act (APJ) 1987, which pertains to reckless driving causing death.

Fatal Accident at Kanowit/Durin Roundabout

The fatal accident occurred on the evening of March 30 at the Kanowit/Durin Roundabout. Marutin was a passenger in a Toyota Fortuner when it was involved in a collision with a Proton X70. The impact of the crash tragically resulted in him being thrown from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene due to severe head injuries.

The suspect, who was in the Proton X70, did not suffer any injuries. However, four other passengers in the Toyota Fortuner sustained minor injuries and are currently receiving treatment at Kanowit Hospital.

Marutin Pagan’s Distinguished Career

Marutin Pagan, originally from Machan, Kanowit, had an extensive and respected career in the judiciary. He previously served as a Sessions Court Judge in Sibu and Bintulu and as a Magistrate’s Court Judge in Kuching. His dedication to the legal profession led to his appointment as the Director of the Sabah State Courts.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the accident. The case is being handled under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries severe penalties for reckless driving resulting in death.
