Police Crack Down on ‘Mat Rempit’ Gangs in Seberang Jaya

Police Crack Down on ‘Mat Rempit’ Gangs in Seberang Jaya

SEBERANG JAYA – A large-scale police operation has once again put pressure on the notorious ‘Mat Rempit’ street gang activities along the North-South Expressway (PLUS), particularly around the Permatang Pauh exit in Central Seberang Perai District.

The joint operation, known as Op Tutup (Integrated Street Gangsters), was spearheaded by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division (BSPT) of IPD Seberang Perai Tengah (SPT). It also involved JSPT IPK Pulau Pinang, EMPV Bukit Aman, BSPT IPD Timur Laut, BSPT IPD SPS, BSPT IPD Barat Daya, as well as PLUS Auxiliary Police.

According to police, the operation was launched after monitoring groups of teenagers on motorcycles and cars who were gathering at the highway stretch and the exit point to watch illegal racing. The activities, which took place during the weekend, not only disrupted traffic but also posed serious risks to road users.

Most of the riders were seen racing at dangerous speeds, performing stunts such as wheelies and zig-zag manoeuvres, while some modified their motorcycles to produce loud exhaust noises. Others were also reported to be riding against the flow of traffic, further endangering themselves and other motorists.

During the operation, 400 motorcycles were inspected and 614 summonses were issued for various traffic offences. Police also seized 135 motorcycles that failed to comply with road regulations.

In addition, six individuals were arrested under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous riding. The Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division (JSJN) of IPD SPT also detained three individuals who tested positive for methamphetamine and ketamine.

Police have reminded the public, especially young riders, to obey all road laws and regulations for their own safety and that of other road users. Authorities also stressed that similar enforcement operations will continue regularly to curb illegal racing activities. – IPD SEBERANG PERAI TENGAH
