KUCHING – The Pra-Gawai celebration at Kampung Sungai Laru drew strong community participation this week, with Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng emphasising the importance of unity, cultural harmony, and education in shaping Sarawak’s future.
The event, organised by the Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) together with local residents, was attended by community leaders, volunteers, and families.
Dato Wee expressed gratitude to the organisers and participants, noting that the gathering reflected Sarawak’s enduring spirit of togetherness.
In his address, the mayor highlighted that the Pra-Gawai celebration was more than a festive occasion of food, music, and entertainment.
He described it as a platform to strengthen bonds of friendship and mutual respect among people of different backgrounds.
He stressed that Sarawak’s multicultural harmony remains one of its greatest strengths and must be preserved for generations to come.
Dato Wee also paid tribute to mothers, recognising their role as the backbone of families and communities.
He acknowledged their sacrifices, love, and guidance as vital in nurturing strong households and resilient societies.
Education was another key theme of the evening. Incentive awards were presented to outstanding SPM students from Kampung Sungai Laru, with Dato Wee congratulating them on their achievements.
He encouraged young people to pursue education as a pathway to a brighter future, not only for themselves but also for their families and the wider community.
The mayor noted that the active involvement of residents demonstrated the importance of maintaining a united community. He said such cooperation contributes to creating a safer, healthier, and happier environment for all.
Dato Wee assured residents that the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) would continue to work closely with the community.
He outlined plans for infrastructure improvements, environmental cleanliness programmes, and the enhancement of public facilities.
He added that MBKS would also support initiatives designed to benefit residents directly, reinforcing the council’s commitment to community development.
He further emphasised that development should not be limited to physical projects. Instead, it should also focus on strengthening relationships and improving well-being through programmes involving youth, women, senior citizens, and children.
According to him, such efforts are essential to building a balanced and inclusive society. The Pra-Gawai celebration at Kampung Sungai Laru thus served as both a cultural gathering and a reminder of the values that underpin Sarawak’s progress.
With unity, education, and community spirit at the forefront, the event reflected the collective aspirations of residents to preserve harmony while striving for a better future.
