KUCHING – The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has stepped up enforcement against unlicensed hawkers through a morning operation under Opps Gerai, targeting several areas across the city.
The exercise, which took place at Tabuan Heights, Bulatan Setia Raja, the bus stop near Lion Nursing Home, and Tabuan Tranquillity 3, saw officers taking firm action against individuals trading without valid permits or operating in unauthorised locations. Items used in these activities were confiscated during the operation.
Council representatives highlighted that illegal hawking not only breaches local regulations but also creates risks for public safety and health. Stalls set up along road shoulders and bus stops can obstruct pedestrian movement and disrupt traffic flow.
In addition, food sold without proper oversight raises concerns about hygiene standards and environmental cleanliness.
This latest enforcement marks the second such operation carried out by MBKS in 2026, reflecting its continued commitment to ensuring that business activities are conducted lawfully and only in designated areas.
The Council has made clear that enforcement is not arbitrary but is based on public complaints, routine monitoring, and patrols.
MBKS further emphasised that similar operations will be conducted periodically to maintain order and safeguard community wellbeing.
Traders are urged to apply for proper licences and operate responsibly, while members of the public are encouraged to assist by reporting illegal activities.
The Council reiterated that its enforcement strategy is part of a broader effort to preserve Kuching’s reputation as a clean, safe, and orderly city.
By tackling unauthorised hawking, MBKS aims to protect both consumers and legitimate businesses, ensuring fair competition and compliance with established regulations.
