KUCHING – Calls for pragmatic governance and community unity took centre stage as the Sarawak Yunnan Charity Association inaugurated its new leadership for the 2026 to 2028 term.
The ceremony, held recently in the city, marked a significant transition for the organisation with the official induction of both the Executive Committee and the newly formed Youth Wing.
Dato Wee Hong Seng, Mayor of the Kuching South City Council (MBKS), attended the dinner on behalf of the Guest of Honour, Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian. In his address, he conveyed warm congratulations to the incoming committee members and urged them to collaborate with singular purpose.
He expressed hope that the association would continue to prosper under fresh stewardship, maintaining its longstanding reputation for selfless service.
For decades, the Yunnan Charity Association has embodied the philosophy of taking from society and giving back without expectation of recognition.
The organisation has consistently supported vulnerable communities across racial and religious lines, providing essential services ranging from medical aid and poverty alleviation to elderly care and food assistance.
This enduring commitment to social welfare was highlighted as a model for civic responsibility that prioritises warmth and compassion over public applause.
A notable development at this year’s inauguration was the formal establishment of the Youth Wing. The mayor emphasised the importance of integrating modern creativity and digital technology into charitable work.
By bringing these initiatives into schools and online platforms, the younger generation can ensure the association’s mission remains relevant and sustainable for future decades. This generational handover is seen as vital for preserving the spirit of volunteerism in an evolving social landscape.
Beyond charity, the event also provided a platform to address broader civic discourse. Dato Wee stressed that while societal oversight is necessary, it should not devolve into fault-finding or obstructionism.
He argued that the public expects leaders who offer tangible solutions rather than those who merely criticise. True political value, he noted, stems from measurable achievements and decisive action rather than emotional rhetoric or empty slogans.
The mayor also clarified recent public discussions regarding flood mitigation infrastructure. There had been suggestions for MBKS to utilise RM300 million from its reserves to fully fund a RM2.6 billion project.
He explained that this is a federally managed initiative, with the Deputy Premier already confirming that works will commence in phases starting in 2027 using federal allocations. He pointed out the mathematical impracticality of expecting local council reserves to cover such a massive national infrastructure undertaking.
“If RM300 million could truly solve the RM2.6 billion project, I would be the first to raise that money,” he stated, underscoring the need for realistic fiscal planning. His remarks aimed to ground public expectations in financial reality whilst reaffirming the council’s commitment to supporting federal efforts where appropriate.
Looking forward, Sarawak’s sustainable development was described as dependent on stability, cooperation, and pragmatism.
Resources must be strategically directed towards attracting investment, upgrading infrastructure, and enhancing education and healthcare systems.
These pillars are considered essential for improving the overall well-being of the population and ensuring long-term prosperity for the state.
